My soul waits for the LORD,
more than watchmen for the morning, *
more than watchmen for the morning. (Psalm 130:6, BCP)
I’m no night watchman, but I’m learning to wait for the Lord in the morning.
We moved recently, and it gave me an occasion to make over my prayer routine. The biggest thing that has changed for me is starting earlier, plus I light a couple candles and a lamp to hold the space.
It’s helped me realize that I want to be in the dark with God. The light can be harsh and pushy. The darkness invites and envelopes me with no agenda.
In the darkness I meet the God who just is, and who invites me to just be as well.

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor
Heard her read from this at VTS once, I think while she was still working on it. Very affecting.
