A prayer upon being called for jury duty

O Lord, our lives pull us in many directions.
Help me, at this time, in this place, to focus on the task before me.

O Lord, it is so easy to despair over things left undone.
Help me use this occasion to reflect on what is essential.

O Lord, you knit us together as one human family.
Help me to serve my neighbors with gladness and gratitude.

O Lord, you call us to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly.
Help me to deliberate wisely with my peers.

O Lord, too often our human systems pray upon the vulnerable.
Help me to be thoughtful and critical of the evidence before me.

O Lord, our times are always in your hands.
I commend to you the lives my life will touch in the days ahead.

Blessed are you for ever and ever. Amen.

Please say a prayer for me today as I begin my four weeks of jury duty service. And please bear with me if (probably when) I fall behind on the site in the coming days.

Enable us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from different cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
